Region of Kassel
From a geographical point of view, the region of Kassel is located
in the centre of Germany. This region was born within the territorial reform of 1972. It
consists of 29 towns and municipalities stretching over an area of 1,293 Km2 and it has
about 230,000 inhabitants.
Its forest richness and the rivers Weser, Diemel and Fulda make it
the ideal place for active sports such as excursions, riding on bicycle o canoeing. Its
many towns and villages with their typically entwined houses, the settings of the tales
by the Grimm brothers and the cultural heritage as shown by the various Huguenot colonies
are the main points of tourist attraction.
The industry of the region of Kassel is based mainly on small
and medium businesses. In the middle of 1994 there were in the region over 1,600 handicraft
businesses with about 13,200 employees. The biggest industry is the Volkwagen plant in the
Bauna valley.
